Pilates FAQ

Useful information for your visit to Mayfair Pilates at Matt Roberts Evolution.

DO I NEED TO WEAR GRIP SOCKS?

All our clients will be asked to wear grip socks. We feel this is the most effective way to train in a pilates studio. It helps to keep equipment hygienic and prevents any accidents especially when standing on the equipment. We sell a small collection of socks please ask at reception or one of the instructors.

WHAT TO WEAR?

Any comfortable clothing that you can move well in will be appropriate for pilates. We ask all clients to wear grip socks as these prevent accidents and ensure everyone enjoys their experience.

WHAT FACILITIES ARE THERE?

We have two well designed changing rooms with showers and lockers. Towels will be provided and there is of course a cafe to enjoy a smoothie or protein fix after your session.

WHAT IS PILATES?

Pilates is a method of exercise pioneered by Joseph Pilates in Germany. It first started whilst he was a prisoner in war camp and devised exercises for patients in Hospital. It soon became obvious that his patients, doing his exercises would improve quicker than others. Pilates was then introduced to the world and has become part of the regular training regime of  ballet dancers and athletes. Pilates is a way of movement to help improve limb alignment, control, strength and to teach good spinal alignment. Pilates helps to injury proof people as it ensures that our bodies are working efficiently. It helps to build core strength and will help people resolve and manage back pain.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I COME?

Pilates is a fantastic way to compliment other exercise programs from strength training to cardio exercises. You will get most benefit out of attending at least twice per week but could attend up to 3-4 sessions per week.

WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY?

We have a 24 hour cancellation policy for our 1-1 sessions and a 12 hour cancellation policy for our classes. Please see our terms and conditions for full information.

WHY SHOULD I DO CLINICAL PILATES OVER FITNESS PILATES?

Clinical pilates can be a good choice when recovering after a significant injury or you need to adapt certain things due to a current injury. Our physiotherapists are specialists at modifying and adapting the positions or exercises to allow you to progress your rehabilitation and build upon your goals.

MAT VS REFORMER/EQUIPMENT?

The beauty about using equipment is that you get all the benefits of the mat based exercises and so much more. You are able to increase or decrease load or vary positions to create the perfect exercise mix for the individual.

PILATES VS YOGA?

Yoga and Pilates can be very complimentary however they are often different types of exercise. Pilates can be modified to make exercises relatively easy or targeted to make them extremely challenging. Yoga is an excellent training tool and often focuses more on flexibility whereas Pilates is more about the control of movement.

WHAT IS A PHYSIO-LED CLINICAL PILATES 4:1?

It’s just like a Pilates 1:1 or Physio-led exercise therapy session with less supervision. It is run by our Specialist Physiotherapists and has 4 clients that are led through a bespoke exercise session that addresses all that you need to be working on. You will be using a variety of the studio equipment. We will be able to track your progress using our Reassessment tools.

DO I NEED TO DO A 1:1 FIRST OR CAN I GO STRAIGHT INTO CLASSES?

You do not need to have a 1:1 session first before joining a class however if you have any specific injury or a complex body then it would be advisable to have a 1:1 first to help you to understand the basics as this can be adapted specifically to you. Whilst our classes are small with only 4 people they are not bespoke to every individual unless you are undertaking a Clinical Studio Class which is Physio led and you will have had a program specifically designed for you.

WHAT LEVEL REFORMER PILATES CLASS SHOULD I CHOOSE?

The Foundation reformer class takes you through all the basic principles but allows you to be challenged on the reformer. It helps to progress through these sessions as it allows you to grasp the basics and improve your movement patterns before stepping into the harder sessions.

Intermediate classes are for those with good fitness levels who train regularly and will have done pilates before and like to be challenged.

The master class is tough. It is for our clients who have excelled through the intermediate classes and want to achieve “Master” status.

We suggest that all individuals who haven’t done Pilates before start with the Foundation class.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN EACH CLASS?

There are a maximum of four people per class.

CAN I COME IF I’M INJURED?

If you have a well managed injury and have been advised it is safe to undertake pilates then you could attend your class however if in doubt seeking the advice of one of our Specialist Physiotherapists first would be advisable.

I AM PREGNANT. CAN I DO PILATES?

Pilates can be a great tool during pregnancy. Due to all the hormonal changes that occur within pregnancy we advise our clients to have a 1:1 session if they are starting Pilates after the 1st Trimester( 12 weeks). This allows the Instructor to assess your body and make any necessary modifications to your training.
