Shockwave therapy, also known as Radial Shockwave and Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, is an excellent non-invasive treatment which is now recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Evidence.

Originally designed to be used as a non-invasive technique to treat kidney stones in the 1980s, users noticed an improvement in the tissue quality surrounding the kidneys, with an increase in tissue and bone healing adjacent to the treated area. A great deal of research since this time has gone into developing and optimising shockwave therapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Shockwave therapy involves the transmission of energy (acoustic shock energy – like the energy caused by a plane at supersonic speed) to a targeted tissue. It involves using a non-invasive probe, similar to an ultrasound treatment, and passing this energy through your skin.

Each treatment takes roughly 20 minutes, and depending on the issue can vary between 3-8 treatments to lead to a therapeutic benefit.

About Radial Shockwave

The excellent therapeutic benefits of ultrasound are caused with various mechanisms, but are all down to the tissue absorbing the energy we apply to it.

The stimulation of the tissue effectively kick starts the body’s natural healing mechanism, especially useful in long term complaints where the body’s natural process can slow or stall after time. This leads to an increase in cellular activity in the body; all leading to more efficient and more successful healing!

Additionally, shockwave therapy has the following benefits:

  • Stimulates local blood flow, bringing fresh “building blocks” of new tissue and removing waste products and toxins.
  • Breaks down thickenings and deposits in muscles and tendons.
  • Reduces pain by overloading your pain receptive nerve endings. In the same way your body gets used to the sensation of wearing socks, your body becomes aware and adjusted to the shockwave sensation, often leading to an instant reduction in pain.

The evidence base for shockwave therapy is growing on an almost daily basis and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of a huge variety of problems and body parts.

Shockwave however tends to be most effective in chronic or longstanding problems, or those that are not quite healing despite other interventions, such as:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Patellar Tendinopathy
  • Golfer’s Elbow
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Shoulder Tendinopathies (especially Calcific tendinopathies)

Shockwave therapy also has great benefits in treating trigger points, tight sore muscles and any condition that’s limited or affected by tight musculature- including shin splints, chronic muscle injury, upper back and neck pain.
